Explore five books that changed medical history with Christie's

RSM members are warmly invited to a free webinar organised by Christie’s ahead of their forthcoming auction Valuable Books, Manuscripts and Photographs, which includes a small number of heritage items being offered for sale from the RSM’s archive collection.

Taking place on Wednesday 3 December 2025 at 6pm, the talk brings together medical historian and author Richard Barnett, Selina Hurley, Curator of Medicine at the Science Museum, and Meg Ford, International Head of Books and Manuscripts at Christie’s – an expert panel who will discuss how five key books helped shape the development of modern medicine.

The conversation will explore both the scientific and historical influence of these works and their physical histories – how they were printed, who owned them, the inscriptions and marginalia they contain and the journeys they have taken, centering on themes including:

• Books as physical objects
• Influence and the different timescales of impact
• The representation of women in medical texts
• Illustration and the evolution of the medical gaze

As outlined previously to RSM members, the decision to offer these items for sale was made in order to raise funds to invest in our future – both to meet the expectations of today’s members, and to build for those who will join us in the years ahead. Proceeds from the sale will be invested directly in delivering improvements for members: enhancing our spaces, strengthening our digital and learning platforms, and broadening opportunities for professional development.

This webinar offers a unique opportunity for our members to explore some of these extraordinary items before they move into new custodianship.
