The RSM launches '21st Century Healthcare', a collaboration with ITN productions

The Royal Society of Medicine and ITN Productions have launched ‘21st Century Healthcare,’ a news and current affairs-style programme which explores the need for a collaborative approach to medicine to encourage new thinking. The programme brings to life the solutions to some prominent healthcare issues.

‘21st Century Healthcare’ showcases clinicians, academics and innovators who are shaping the future of healthcare, as well as the array of specialties and educational programmes run by the Royal Society of Medicine. Demonstrating the importance of team-based learning, sharing and creating new knowledge, the programme celebrates success stories from the wider healthcare team.

The average person checks their phone some 200 times each day and touches it at least two and a half thousand times, yet the harms and benefits of social media are not widely understood. ‘21st Century Healthcare’ features a report from a Royal Society of Medicine event that discusses the effects of social media on mental health and wellbeing.

For those who have studied medicine, there are many career pathways. From the frontline of healthcare, to the forefront of innovation, the opportunities are vast. Deciding which specialty to pursue can be overwhelming and this programme talks to medical students and trainees who attended the Royal Society of Medicine’s Specialty Careers Fair to discover how they are exploring the wide variety of medical career paths available.

‘21st Century Healthcare’ also looks into the challenges of child refugee healthcare. With an estimated 11 million child refugees across the globe, the programme explores the availability of healthcare for this vulnerable section of the population and what should be done to improve access.

The programme also features an interview with Chief Executive of the Royal Society of Medicine, Helen Gordon, who talks about how the education for health care professionals needs to adapt to meet the needs of patient care, as well as sharing information on the RSM’s new partnership with the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur programme.

Drawing upon ITN’s 60-year heritage and expertise in storytelling, presented by national newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky, the news-style programme combines key interviews, case studies and sponsored stories from Amgen, Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Echo, Heraeus Medical, Northumberland Tyne & Wear NHS Foundation Trust, Norwich Medical School University of East Anglia, Proximie Limited, St George’s University of London, Tissue Regenix Group, University of Liverpool and University of Manchester.

Helen Gordon, Chief Executive, Royal Society of Medicine, said: “This programme is a great showcase for the RSM and the partners who have been involved in the project. There are some fascinating stories to be told about the development of new therapies, treatments and ways of working in medicine today and the programme shows how clinical innovation and medical education can come together to deliver improvements in patient care.”

Simon Shelley, Head of Industry News, ITN Productions, said: "ITN Productions has been delighted to partner with the Royal Society of Medicine to create ‘21st Century Healthcare’. We hope this programme will help to inform and enlighten viewers of the importance of a collaborative approach to medicine. We are extremely pleased with how this programme brings to life the importance of creating and sharing new knowledge to enable new innovations and break through ideas”.
