Winners of prestigious travelling fellowships for RSM members revealed

Meet the winners

The names of the successful applicants for the 2023 Ellison-Cliffe Travelling Fellowships have been announced. Open to senior registrars and early career consultants, the fellowships offer members of the Royal Society of Medicine the opportunity to compete for substantial financial awards to support their specialist training overseas.

Four fellowships were awarded to doctors specialising in different disciplines. Final year dermatology specialty trainee Dr Conor Broderick will be travelling to Canada, while Mr Ryan Cheong, an ST8 senior specialty registrar in advanced head and neck and transoral robotic surgery will spend time in the USA and Singapore. NIHR Clinical Lecturer and eye surgeon Mr Michael Gilhooley will also be heading to the USA, while ST7 cardiology registrar Dr Sharon Man will be spending her time overseas in France.

Dr Melita Irving, RSM Trustee and Chair of the Ellison-Cliffe Charitable Trust which awards the fellowships, said: “The shortlisting committee was once again extremely impressed with the quality of applications received for the 2023 Ellison-Cliffe Travelling Fellowship.

“Applicants varied in their backgrounds. There was representation from both medical and surgical specialities, and from trainees relatively early in their speciality training, hoping to access cutting-edge education overseas, as well as those near-completion, looking to finesse their UK-based training with additional skills.”

The Ellison-Cliffe Travelling Fellowships were set up in 2004 by the late Dr Carice Ellison and her husband Dr Percy Cliffe through their charitable foundation, which also supports an eponymous lecture given each year at the RSM exploring science at the coalface of medicine.

The travelling fellowships are designed to cover expenses for travel abroad to one or two centres, for a period of no less than six months, in pursuit of further study, research or clinical training. The latest candidates bring the number of fellowships awarded since inception of the awards to 51.

Dr Irving added: “We continue to be encouraged by the interest shown in these travelling fellowships; Dr Carice Ellison would be delighted to know her legacy lives on in supporting these inspiring young doctors.”
