Nominations sought for next RSM President and three Trustees

The Royal Society of Medicine is seeking nominations for its next President, to succeed Professor Roger Kirby, whose term ends in 2024. The successful candidate will attend Council as President-elect from October 2023 and take up the post of President on 30 July 2024 for a period of three years.

For the first time in its 218-year history, RSM members will be able to vote for the next President. Until now, the President has been elected by a vote of Council Trustees.

Nominations are also sought for three Council Trustees, one of whom must be a trainee. All nominees must be Fellows of the Society.

The closing dates for applications are:

  • 12 noon on Monday 13 March 2023 for RSM President
  • and 12 noon on Monday 27 March 2023 for Council Trustees.

Candidates standing for President must have been a member of the RSM for at least five years and be in good standing. Each nominee will require a proposer and two seconders who can be Fellows or Associate Members of the Society. All nominations must be submitted on the appropriate form, which is available from Joanna Rose, Charity Secretary, (joanna.rose@rsm.ac.uk).

Professor Kirby said: “This is an exciting time to join the Council of the RSM as we continue to deliver our 2021-2026 strategy ‘Better Healthcare for Better Lives.’ We are keen to encourage candidates with experience that can help support the RSM team as we grasp the opportunity of modernising the RSM by bringing it into the digital age without losing sight of its impressive and august heritage.”

To ensure potential nominees are familiar with the duties and responsibilities of a Council Trustee and fully understand the necessary work and time commitments involved, meetings for all potential nominees will be arranged with Michele Acton, RSM Chief Executive, and a current Trustee. Nominees standing for President will be required to meet with Ms Acton and Professor Kirby. These meetings will take place ahead of the closing date for submitting application forms. Please contact Joanna Rose to organise a convenient time.

Further information, including details of how to apply, can be found in a letter from Professor Kirby.
