Professor Sir Simon Wessely elected Fellow of The Royal Society

Professor Sir Simon Wessely, Immediate Past President of the Royal Society of Medicine, has been named as one of 52 newly elected Fellows of the Royal Society for their exceptional contribution to science.

The Royal Society is a Fellowship of many of the world's most eminent scientists and is the oldest scientific academy in continuous existence.

Sir Simon is a leading academic psychiatrist, appointed to the first ever Regius Chair of Psychiatry in the country at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neurosciences, King's College London. He is renowned for his work changing our understanding of medically unexplained symptoms, and how we manage psychological trauma.

Congratulating Sir Simon, RSM President Professor Roger Kirby said:

“To be elected a Fellow of the Royal Society is one of the greatest of honours in the field of science and I speak on behalf of everyone at the RSM in saluting Simon for his most recent achievement. As well as being a distinguished scientist and one of the most recognised media spokespeople on mental health, Simon has become a leading voice of the RSM, bringing his own unique and engaging style as a regular host of our Covid-19 and In Conversation broadcasts. We greatly appreciate his contribution to the work of our Society.”
