RSM members honoured at Zenith Global Healthcare Awards 2019

Former RSM President Professor Sir Michael Rawlins and former President of the RSM Surgery Section Professor William Thomas were honoured with Lifetime Achievement Awards at the prestigious Zenith Global Healthcare Awards 2019. Former President of the RSM Trainees Committee, Dr Afsana Elanko, received the prestigious Global Health Medal.

The Zenith awards recognise those who have excelled in the field of global health to ensure the delivery and sustenance of quality care for patients worldwide.

Professor Sir Michael Rawlins is best known for his work as former Chair of the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which has had far-reaching effects on the delivery of high-quality healthcare in both the UK and around the world. Following the presentation of his Lifetime Achievement Award Sir Michael treated the audience to stories of his career highlights during an “in conversation with” Dr Elanko.

Professor William Thomas has worked tirelessly to improve surgical training and skills by taking the Royal College of Surgeons Basic Skills Course to low and middle-income countries across the globe. His passion for surgical education as a driver to improve surgical services in many parts of the developing world shone through during his acceptance speech and interview.

Dr Elanko was awarded the Global Health Medal, which is presented only once every ten years. Her selfless and indefatigable work in the field of medical education has inspired a generation of colleagues internationally and RSM members here in the UK. The award recognises her contributions to numerous academic and professional societies, alongside her contribution to policy-making and documentation for victims of torture at Westminster.
